This song portrays a very complex and realistic Los Angeles, one which Beck experienced growing up in LA. In juxtaposing mundane and intense images (representing the erratic nature of street-life in Los Angeles) Beck ironizes the stereo-typical "California dream" of a life of luxury, ease and simplicity. Despite the allusions to violent, racially-motivated crimes and crippling poverty, the song is a positive one set to a moderate and funky groove. California is not all bad. The world of “Que Onde Guera” is no dreamed-up paradise, but that’s exactly what makes it wonderful; it’s real.
